When using Sacrifice Construct (Truth in the Darkness), page 75 it says...
"Construct engineers are best left out of the line of fire, but this isn't always the case. If an engineer has a construct in hand, they may use it to take damage for them. No roll is required; the construct is simply destroyed and engineer takes no damage. This ability doesn't work against called shots or area-of-effect attacks."
If in combat, to use these contructs as a way to avoid direct attack damage, does it take a defensive action to use these constructs to avoid direct damage. It would seem that a Construct Engineer would carry a load of these devices to avoid all direct damage.

No it does not take a defensive action. This is only used when you are about to take damage. It would be after a defensive action has been taken, or you chose not to take one. The limiting factor is that you have to have a construct in hand so it will only be able to take one hit per round and it costs you.
